From “how high should a netball ring be?” to information on netball equipment regulations, we’ll try and further demystify the often bewildering world of sports equipment…

Buying a netball post should be simple, right?

How high should a netball ring be?

The regulation ring height for the adult game is 3.05m (10 ft). However, provision is also made for younger players who would struggle to shoot a ball that high. Therefore, High 5 netball (9-11 year olds) use rings set at 2.75m (9 ft) high and First Step netball (7-9 year olds) rings should be 2.44m (8ft) high.

If you’re using a netball post that will cater for different age groups, it’s highly recommended that you select a post with an adjustable ring height.

What other regulations apply to netball rings?

Regulation netball rings have an internal diameter of 380mm (15 inches). They should be made from 15mm thick steel rod and project horizontally 150mm (6 inches) away from the upright.

What colour net should I use?

Netball nets should be clearly visible and are commonly supplied in either orange or green. Regulation/competition nets are usually white.

What about the netball post itself?

Regulation uprights measure between 65mm and 100mm (2.5 to 4 inches) in diameter. The base of the goal post should not encroach onto the court itself and be placed on the outside of the goal line.

Uprights should also be covered with post padding for added safety. These pads should be no thicker than 50mm and cover the entire length of the upright.

Socketed or freestanding netball posts?

On dedicated netball courts, only socketed posts should be used. However, multi-use courts, schools and community facilities do have the option to use freestanding netball posts. The base of any regulation freestanding netball post should not encroach onto the court. If the post is likely to be moved frequently, wheelaway bases are recommended for easier maneuverability.

Important safety notes for netball posts:

• It’s important that the base is sufficiently weighted to prevent the post from falling over.
• When freestanding posts are not in use, they should also be laid down and secured in a covered location.
• When moving wheelaway posts, they should be ‘pushed’ whilst holding the top end of the post.
